The Healthy Orange County
Staff Wellness

The Health Promotion for Staff component provides opportunities for school staff to improve their health status through activities such as health assessments, health education, and health-related fitness activities. These opportunities encourage school staff to pursue a healthy lifestyle that contributes to their improved health status, improved morale, and a greater personal committment to the school's overall coordinated school health programs. This personal committment often transfers into greater committment to the health of students and creates positive role modeling. Health promotion activities have improved productivity, decreased absenteeism, and reduced health insurance costs.

Below are example strategies that support Health Promotion for Staff as part of the Coordinated School Health Model:

  • Offer first aid and CPR training to staff
  • Offer physical activity and healthy eating programs to staff
  • Create a walking program for staff before and after school
  • Work with a local gym to provide discounts to staff
  • Offer conflict resolution programs to staff
  • Promote staff participation in school-wide health programs
  • Offer health screenings for staff, including blood pressure, body mass index, and body fat
  • Offer stress management programs and tobacco-use cessation programs to staff
  • Encourage staff to be active when students are being active
  • Provide a discount on health insurance as an incentive
