Physical Education

The Physical Education component is a planned, sequential K-12 curriculum that provides cognitive content and learning experiences in a variety of activity areas such as basic movement skills; physical fitness; rhythms and dance; games; team, dual, and individual sports; tumbling and gymnastics; and aquatics. Quality physical education should promote physical, mental, emotional, and social development, and should promote activities and sports that all students enjoy and can pursue thoughout their lives.

Below are example strategies that support Physical Education as part of the Coordinated School Health Model:

  • Have students design and implement their own individual physical activity plans
  • Ensure teachers avoid practices that result in student inactivity such as taking away recess or physical education class as punishment
  • Hire a certified physical education teacher
  • Offer opportunities for professional development for physical education teachers
  • Align the physical education curriculum with the National and State Physical Education Standards
  • Ensure students are active at least 50% during physical education class time
  • Establish a policy requiring physical education for all secondary students
  • Provide 225 minutes of physical education a week for all students
