Health Services

The Health Services component consists of services provided for students to appraise, protect, and promote health. These services are designed to ensure access or referrel to primary health care services or both, prevent and control communicable diseases and other health problems, provide emergency care for illness or injury, promote and provide sanitary conditions for a safe school facility and environment, and provide educational opportunities for promoting and maintaining individual, family and community health.

Below are example strategies that support Health Services as part of the Coordinated School Health Model:

  • Encourage the school nurse and staff to collaborate to promote health and safety
  • Encourage the school nurse to promote health and safety of students and families, such as proper hand washing
  • Collect and update student medical information relevant to participation in physical activity
  • Collect and update student medical information relevant to special dietary needs
  • Screen for tobacco use in students
  • Maintain updated immunization records of students
  • Provide vision and hearing screenings on students
  • Implement an oral care education program in schools
