The Healthy Orange County
Family & Community

The Family and Community Involvement component promotes an integrated school, parent, and community approach for enhancing the health and well-being of students. School health advisory counclls, coalitions, and broadly based constituencies for school health can build support for school health program efforts. Schools actively solicit parent involvement and engage community resources and services to respond more effectively to the health-related needs of students.

Below are example strategies that support Family and Community Involvement as part of the Coordinated School Health Model:

  • Educate families on health and wellness
  • Educate families on effective parenting strategies
  • Give assignments that encourage student interaction with family and community
  • Encourage parents and/or community members to help plan and implement school health programs
  • Communicate to families about community-based health programs
  • Work with the community to develop a walking trail on school grounds for school and community use
  • Hold monthly activity nights for the school and community on the school grounds
  • Establish strong community links for referrels
  • Offer community access to indoor and outdoor school facilities outside school hours
